iCloud backup

By the Silock TeamUpdated

The short answer

Turn on iCloud backup and Silock copies your silos to your own iCloud, already encrypted. Apple stores the data but can't read it. On a new iPhone, your recovery phrase brings everything back.

Phones get lost, broken and replaced. A vault that lives only on one iPhone goes with it. Silock’s iCloud backup keeps a copy in your own iCloud, without giving anyone a way to read it.

Encrypted before it leaves

Everything in Silock is already encrypted on your iPhone. The backup uploads those encrypted files as they are, so:

  • Apple receives only encrypted data. No photos, no file names, no silo names.
  • File sizes are padded, so the backup doesn’t reveal exactly how big each file is.
  • We never see it. It goes to your own iCloud, not to a server of ours.

When it runs

Silock backs up shortly after you add or change something, when you leave the app, and whenever you tap Back Up Now in Settings. Your iPhone keeps Silock’s files locked while the phone is locked, so a backup that’s cut short simply picks up next time.

Restoring on a new iPhone

  1. Install Silock on the new iPhone, signed in to the same iCloud account.
  2. At setup, Silock finds your backup and offers to restore it.
  3. Enter your recovery phrase. Silock checks it before downloading anything big.
  4. Everything downloads and is switched in only once it’s complete.

Silos with their own password ask for their own recovery phrase the first time you open them on the new iPhone.

It won’t overwrite another backup

If iCloud already holds a Silock backup from a different iPhone, or from before Silock was set up again, Silock stops and asks before replacing it.

Questions people ask

Can Apple see my backed-up photos?

No. Silock encrypts everything on your iPhone before it's uploaded, so iCloud only ever holds encrypted data. File names, dates and silo names are encrypted too.

Does it use my iCloud storage?

Yes. The backup is stored in your own iCloud account, so it counts toward your iCloud storage.

Is backup part of Free?

Yes. iCloud backup works on Free and on Silock Pro.

Can I delete the backup?

Yes. When you turn backup off, Silock asks whether to keep the backup in iCloud or delete it.
